BEIRUT: Lebanese universities put in a respectable performance in the latest edition of the prestigious QS higher education ranking, with the American University of Beirut (AUB) coming in at 237 out of 1100 places, and Université St. Joseph (USJ) landing the 500 spot.

The QS world ranking is generally viewed as the most methodologically sound of the various international league tables, which have increased in recent years as universities battle it out to attract students and staff.

The Notre Dame University, Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, and the University of Balamand broke into the rankings for the first time, while AUB, the Lebanese American University and USJ retained their places.

AUB came in at 237 compared to 235 in 2018, USJ remained mid-table while LAU retained its 601-650 position.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remained in pole position for the seventh year in a row, ahead of three other U.S juggernauts in Stanford, Harvard and California Institute of Technology, whose ranks were also maintained.

In terms of UK Universities, an upset was witnessed this time around after Oxford overtook its traditional rival Cambridge for the first time to be named the UK’s highest-rated university.
