The Gebran Tueini Foundation promotes freedom of expression at art exhibition
BEIRUT: In this polarized time where Lebanon is in a state of introspection over its freedom of expression, Gebran Tueini Foundation is adamant about giving artists the chance to freely express themselves.
On Tuesday, Gebran Tueini Foundation launched “Peace of Liberty” exhibition at Beit Beirut under the patronage of Prime Minister Saad El Hariri, who was represented by a member of parliament, Nazih Nejm.
The exhibition is open to the public until September 24, and it holds works of 47 Lebanese artists who addressed freedom in all its manifestations through art, by adopting an innovative and thought-provoking perspective on it and by realizing the enduring need for its protection.
During her speech at the opening ceremony, President of Gebran Tueini Foundation Michel Tueini noted that this exhibition marks a milestone in the organization’s journey which has, with the help of the selected artists, reflected its mission in prioritizing liberty and freedom.
The halls of Beit Beirut were echoing Gebran Tueini’s words from his famous speech that he gave during the Cedar Revolution demonstrations in March 2005: “In the name of God we, Muslims and Christians, pledge that we shall remain united until the end of time to better defend our Lebanon.”
Attendees were taken by the different artwork that promoted art as a force that contributes to freedom from oppression.
Sayings by Gebran, who was known for strongly supporting freedom of speech, were hanging on the walls of the exhibition to amplify the voice of every freedom fighter and to further ignite the fire of freedom in the hearts of revolutionaries.
Gebran Tueni Foundation was established in December 2010 for socio-cultural purposes, namely to support the dreams of the youth, and strives to carry Gebran's message forward in all fields through expositions, lectures, seminars, and roundtables. It works towards the realization of its goals through studies, promotion of talents in various fields, and honoring the memory of all martyrs of press and of the nation. The Gebran Tueni Foundation also includes honorary members who were friends of Gebran Tueni and close to him.
