Fashion is more than just clothes and accessories, it reflects the cultural identity of a civilization.
Many civilizations express their traditions through fashion. Many of those traditions are slowly disappearing due to fast fashion and trends from social media.
People are starting to lose their sense of creativity and aren’t developing their proper taste, hence their cultural identity is fading away. How is fast fashion contributing to dimming cultural identity?
First and foremost, fast fashion is a “business model in the apparel industry that mass-produces trendy, low-cost clothing, allowing retailers to quickly replicate runway or social media styles and get them into stores or online, it relies heavily on cheap, exploitative labor to mass-produce trendy clothing at rock-bottom prices”. There are many examples of this business model that put in market clothes that follow the trends set by influencers on the media for example “the cheetah print” on each apparel.
On the other hand fast fashion has its perks, it can sometimes be unique and very affordable unlike slow fashion which “carries a higher price tag because it reflects the true cost of ethical labor, sustainable materials, and small-batch manufacturing”, for example small local businesses.
However, low prices and continuous launch of new collections result in overconsumption where people buy clothes impulsively and consume them quickly when trends are over.
This process increases waste and pollution on one hand, and on the other hand it changes the value and meaning that clothing once held in different cultures and traditions.
Furthermore, this rapid expansion of fast fashion is impacting one’s creativity and personal taste.
People are easily influenced which leaves no place for self expression through clothes, due to this fashion empire each generation is slowly losing authenticity and originality.
Trends have taken away through the years decades of cultural traditions and heritage which left people question their identity.
Losing aunthenticity may make one feel less original and easy to blend in a society where being original is considered weird and where colors are seen as childish and loud.
Most local brands ended up blending in and losing their spark of originality which led to an erased culture and slowly fading traditions.
In addition, social media constantly promotes the same styles and aesthetics, encouraging people to follow trends instead of developing their own sense of fashion.
As a result, clothing is no longer viewed as a form of personal expression but rather as a way to fit in and gain validation from society.
Over time this leads to a world where individuality becomes rare and cultural diversity in fashion slowly disappears.
In conclusion, fast fashion is not only changing the way people express themselves through clothing, but it is also slowly affecting cultural identity and individuality. It surely offers affordable and trendy clothes but it also encourages people to adapt the same styles instead of embracing their traditions and personal creativity.
Therefore, it is important to preserve originality, cultural heritage, and local businesses in order to ensure diversity and self-expression in fashion for future generations.
