You’re in class, listening to the teacher when suddenly you hear your classmate shouting at your friend and making fun of her hair. She stays silent. She goes quickly to the bathroom and cries. It doesn’t end here, the second day that same guy makes fun of her nail polish. He knocks her down. She gets up quickly and runs. She keeps not reacting. Have you ever imagined how is she feeling? What is she doing at night? She’s 14, scared, shy and bullied. “No one will know”! She said. “He’s stronger and more powerful than me … my parents won’t believe me” She added. This is a story of one of so many girls who are being bullied in schools, streets, workplaces who remains silent.
Aggression is the main tool of the bully. He intends to injure others physically, mentally, or emotionally. Marie Moukawam Touma who’s an Arabic teacher at Sainte Famille – Sahel Alma school, considers that the cause of those behaviors and especially in schools are mostly due to the weak personality of the victim and the anxiety that is controlling him or her with the lack of self-esteem.
She also mentioned that bullying can be caused by other factors like family pressures, social pressures, and personal issues. In most cases, the bully has insecurities about himself and he’s trying to cast them on others.
Bullying has been linked to higher rates of depression and suicidal ideation. Victims of bullying can experience intense emotional distress, leading them to consider suicide as a solution to their pain. Bullying can affect a person's self-esteem and self-worth, leading to long-term psychological damage. It is important to take bullying seriously and seek help if you or someone you know is being bullied.
