Syrian army takes control of Al-Tanf base after U.S. withdrawal
The Syrian Defense Ministry said its troops have secured the Al-Tanf base and begun deploying along the border.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced Thursday that army units have taken control of the Al-Tanf military base following the departure of U.S. forces.
The ministry said that, “through coordination between the Syrian and American sides, units of the Syrian Arab Army have taken over and secured the Al-Tanf base and its surroundings, and have begun deploying along the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border in the Al-Tanf desert.”
It added that border guard forces will begin assuming their duties and deploying in the area in the coming days.
In a separate development, most families of foreign ISIS members have left the Al-Hol camp in eastern Syria after Kurdish forces overseeing the camp withdrew, according to sources in humanitarian organizations and witnesses cited by AFP.
A source in a humanitarian organization said Thursday that the foreign section is nearly empty following the Kurdish withdrawal from the camp at the end of January and its takeover by Syrian security forces.
Another humanitarian source said that “since last Saturday... there are only 20 families left in the migrant section,” the heavily secured area designated for foreigners, which previously held large numbers of women and children from Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
