On Monday, Russia called for a political and diplomatic resolution to the war in the Middle East after US President Donald Trump set a deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, warning that power generation facilities would be destroyed if it failed to comply.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists, including an AFP correspondent, “We believe the situation should move toward a political and diplomatic settlement.”

He added, “This is the only approach that can help defuse the extremely dangerous level of tension the region has reached.”
