Condemnations…
President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, condemned Israel’s targeting of journalists. In a statement, he said: "Once again, Israeli aggression violates the most basic rules of international law, international humanitarian law, and the laws of war by targeting journalists, who are ultimately civilians performing a professional duty."
He added: "This is a blatant crime that violates all the norms and treaties granting journalists international protection during wars, according to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their protocols, specifically Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol (1977) and Security Council Resolution 1738 (2006), which prohibit targeting journalists and media personnel as long as they do not directly participate in hostilities."
He concluded: "We strongly condemn this attack, call on all international bodies to take action to stop what is happening on our land, and extend our condolences to the families of the martyrs and to the journalistic and media community in Lebanon."
In a statement, the Press Club also condemned the Israeli attack that led to the martyrdom of the colleagues, calling for effective measures to protect journalists and media workers and to keep them away from military conflicts.
It also called on international organizations to take effective action to provide an international umbrella for protecting journalists in Lebanon and to hold accountable those who commit crimes against them.
The Lebanese Press Editors Syndicate issued a statement condemning "the massacre committed by Israel against colleagues Fatima Ftouni, Ali Shuaib, and Mohamed Ftouni from Al-Mayadeen and Al-Manar channels, who were martyred in a treacherous airstrike while performing their journalistic work."
The statement added: "The martyrdom of these journalist colleagues is a crime by all standards, reflecting the hostile and annihilatory nature of the Zionist state toward Lebanon and the Lebanese, particularly journalists who document its crimes and report its massacres to a global public that often turns a blind eye, disregarding charters, norms, and international UN protocols that prohibit targeting journalists, media personnel, cameramen, and their technical teams in war zones."
It continued: "This is not the first time Israel has targeted journalists and media workers who are unarmed, relying only on their microphones, pens, voices, and cameras. The syndicate has submitted this new massacre to the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, UNESCO, the Human Rights Council, and the Arab Journalists Union, calling for the widest condemnation of Israel and its crimes against journalists and media workers. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs Shuaib and the Ftouni siblings, as well as to the Al-Mayadeen and Al-Manar teams and affirm that they are with their Lord in a high place among the martyrs, alive and sustained by Him."
The Union of Journalists and Media Professionals also mourned the two colleagues.
The Central Committee for Media and Communication of the Free Patriotic Movement issued a statement describing the attack as follows: "Once again, the Lebanese media is paying a high price in blood for the Israeli war. The deliberate targeting of the martyred colleagues Fatima Ftouni, her brother cameraman Mohamed Ftouni, and Ali Shuaib is a clear and well-defined war crime. The government can no longer just stand by and watch these repeated crimes."
The statement added: "The government is called upon to address all relevant international bodies and expose these crimes. We urge international media organizations concerned with journalists’ freedom and safety to intervene and expose the repeated targeting of Lebanese journalists."
The Israeli army released a video of the airstrike that targeted Ali Shuaib, claiming he "was working with Hezbollah’s Radwan Force."
