The US State Department said on Monday that the administration of President Donald Trump has added the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan to the list of specially designated global terrorist organizations and intends to classify it as a foreign terrorist organization starting March 16.

The statement, published on the department’s website, said that today the State Department is “adding the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan to the list of specially designated global terrorists (SDGT) and intends to designate it as a foreign terrorist organization, with the decision taking effect on March 16, 2026.”

The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood uses unrestricted violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and to promote its violent extremist Islamic ideology. Its fighters, many of whom receive training and other support from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, have carried out mass executions of civilians. The Bara bin Malik Brigade, affiliated with the group, was listed under Executive Order 14098 in September 2025 for its role in Sudan’s bloody conflict.

As the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism, the Iranian regime has funded and directed malicious activities worldwide through the Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The statement emphasized that the United States will use all available tools to deny the Iranian regime and the branches of the Muslim Brotherhood the resources that enable them to conduct or support terrorism.

Trump’s senior advisor for Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, commented on the designation of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a foreign terrorist organization, saying, “We will continue to use all available tools to fight terrorism and counter Iran’s harmful influence.”
