Prince William begins landmark visit to Saudi Arabia to boost UK-Saudi ties

British Prince William begins a three-day visit to Saudi Arabia today, Monday, during which he is set to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Prince William is undertaking the official visit on behalf of the government to strengthen ties between the two countries.
The prince’s visit comes after a trip by the British Finance Minister to Saudi Arabia in 2025, which London said resulted in trade and investment agreements valued at £6.4 billion (US$8.71 billion).
During his visit, William is expected to meet with the Crown Prince and take part in activities highlighting Saudi Arabia’s economic reforms, cultural initiatives, and environmental programs, Kensington Palace said on Monday.
In March 2018, William and his father Charles—who was still a prince at the time—hosted bin Salman for dinner at Clarence House in London, while the late Queen Elizabeth held a separate lunch for Prince Mohammed on the same day.
During his visit to Saudi Arabia, William, the eldest son of King Charles, is expected to meet with Saudi youth and learn about the country’s plans for sustainability and urban development. He will also visit initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, esports, environmental conservation, and cultural collaboration.
The British prince will travel to AlUla, where he will visit wildlife reserves, meet local communities, and tour the Prince of Wales’s House, a new British cultural hub promoting collaboration in the arts and heritage.
The Starmer government aims to strengthen ties with Riyadh as part of its efforts to revive economic growth.
According to official government data from last December, Saudi Arabia was Britain’s 24th-largest trading partner, accounting for 0.9% of the country’s total trade.
Trade in goods and services between the two countries reached £17.2 billion (US$23.1 billion) in the year ending June 30, 2025, marking a 5.6% increase (£910 million at current prices) compared to the previous year.
