Deadly shootout at Israeli Consulate in Istanbul leaves attackers dead

Two police officers injured as authorities confirm consulate was empty; investigation underway into attackers’ ties to terrorism.

A shooting incident was reported at the premises of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

 

According to the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), two police officers were injured in a shootout outside the consulate, while two of the three attackers were killed.

 

 

Turkish media reported gunfire at the Israeli Consulate General in the Levent district of Istanbul, prompting the deployment of numerous police teams to the scene.

 

 

 

 

Sources told CNN that three individuals involved in the armed attack on the consulate were killed.

Turkish media reported that the three suspects were armed with rifles, dressed in camouflage, and carrying backpacks.

 

 

Additionally, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the consulate in Istanbul was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

 

 

Israeli state radio reported that there were no Israeli casualties in the incident.

 

 

The public prosecutor’s office immediately launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

 

 

Turkish media reported that the Minister of Justice has assigned three prosecutors to lead the investigation.

 

 

Reuters, citing sources, reported that there are currently no Israeli diplomats in Turkey.

Identity of the shooters

 

 

The Turkish Interior Minister revealed that two of the attackers at the Israeli consulate in Istanbul were brothers.

 

He stated, “One of the attackers near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul has a history of drug-related offenses.”

 

 

The Governor of Istanbul explained that the attackers near the Israeli consulate were armed with multiple types of firearms.
