On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered his first speech about the war that the United States and Israel launched against Iran in late February.

Here are the main points from the speech:

Trump announced that the war on Iran is "approaching its end," saying, "I am pleased to say tonight that these key strategic objectives are nearing completion."

Trump added that Iran's new leaders are "less extreme and much more rational."

Trump said, "I did what no other U.S. president was willing to do. They made mistakes, and I am correcting them."

He urged U.S. allies to show "courage" and take responsibility for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump added, "To the countries that cannot get fuel and many of which refused to participate in weakening Iran, I have a proposal: First, buy oil from the United States. Second, have enough courage to go to the strait and take control of it. Iran has effectively been destroyed. The hardest part is over."

Trump said that the United States succeeded in changing the regime thanks to "the death of all their previous leaders."

He added that the United States is monitoring key targets amid ongoing negotiations to end the war.

Trump warned, "If no agreement is reached, we will strike every one of their power plants with extreme force, possibly all at once."

He noted that the United States has not attacked Iranian oil, even though it is "the easiest target ever, because it would not give them even the slightest chance to survive or rebuild."

Trump said, "Iran has been almost completely destroyed, the hardest part is over, so it should be easy. In any case, when this conflict ends, the Strait of Hormuz will open automatically. It will open simply, and they will want to sell oil because that is all they have to try to rebuild."

He described the war as a response to 47 years of violence by Iran and its proxies, citing the bombing of a Marine barracks nearly 40 years ago and the attack on the U.S. destroyer Cole in 2000.

Trump said, "If these terrorists possess nuclear weapons, it would represent an unbearable threat. The most violent and brutal regime on earth would be able to carry out its terrorist, repressive, and mass-killing campaigns from behind a nuclear shield."

He added, "Iran's navy is gone. Their air forces in ruins. Their leaders, most of them, terrorist, regime they led are now dead. Their leadership and control over the Revolutionary Guard are being destroyed at this very moment. Their ability to launch missiles and drones has been greatly reduced, and their weapons, factories, and missile launchers are being blown up… our enemies are losing."

Trump said, "And America, as it has throughout the past five years of my administration, is winning, and now, it is winning bigger than ever."

He began his speech by congratulating the NASA team on the launch of the first manned mission to the Moon in half a century, saying, "I want to start by congratulating the NASA team and the brave astronauts on the successful launch of Artemis 2. This spacecraft will travel farther than any manned spacecraft has ever gone… They are on their way, and we pray for their success."
