BEIRUT: The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) launched Thursday a new research initiative that aims to promote the “Women, Peace and Security” (WPS) agenda in the MENA region.

“This project will be a step towards endorsing a concerted effort to introduce research and innovative ideas from the MENA region and to tackle regional and global challenges addressed in the WPS Agenda,” said AUB’s website.

IFI’s new project, “Democratizing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda," is supported by the UN Women Regional Office for Arab States, in the context of creating a long-term engagement on the WPS agenda in the region, in a way that aligns with IFI’s goal of gathering MENA experts in WPS.

In fact, several actors including civil society members, governments, and policy experts, have been pushing for the implementation of the WPS agenda in the MENA region, since the adoption of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (SCR 1325) in October 2000, by raising women’s voices and emphasizing their importance in achieving sustainable piece.

According to UN Women, this year's UN Security Council Open Debate on October 29, alongside other events, “will take stock of the implementation of the women, peace and security agenda.”
