In an interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, the spiritual leader of the Druze community, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajari said that “the massacres in Sweida amount to genocide, and the recent massacre proved that we cannot rely on anyone but ourselves to defend our community.”
He stated: “The price was high, but it was not in vain. We are looking for a future in which the Druze are no longer victims. There is no humanitarian corridor with Israel, which makes it extremely difficult to obtain aid. It is no secret that Israel is the only country in the world that intervened militarily to save us from annihilation when it was happening.”
Al-Hajari added that “relations between Israel and the Druze of Sweida are not new and were established long before the fall of Assad. There are blood ties and kinship, and the relationship is natural. Israel is a state of order and international law, and this is what we aspire to. It is the only guaranteed and authorized party in any future agreement. We see ourselves as an integral part of the existence of the State of Israel, as a limb that has formed an alliance with Israel.”
