Iraqi forces carry out airborne arrest operation inside Syria - Video
The Joint Operations Command in Iraq announced on Thursday the capture of two individuals wanted by the Iraqi judiciary during an airborne operation carried out inside Syrian territory, “in coordination with the Syrian side and with support from the international coalition” against ISIS.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Security Media Cell, affiliated with the Operations Command, and published by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
According to the statement, the operation was conducted under the direction and supervision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. A specialized unit from the Falcons Intelligence Cell, part of the Intelligence and Federal Investigations Agency at the Ministry of Interior, carried out the airborne mission targeting two high-profile suspects in northeastern Syria and apprehended them.
The statement said the operation was coordinated with Syrian security forces and carried out with technical support and assistance from the international coalition. It added that such operations enhance countries’ ability to address transnational security challenges and protect national interests.
The Iraqi statement did not provide details about the identities of the suspects or the reasons they were being sought.
There was no immediate comment from Syrian authorities or the international coalition regarding Iraq’s account of the operation.
