Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli attacks that struck several towns in the Bekaa and southern Lebanon, reaching the city of Sidon in recent hours. He said the timing of the attacks raises serious questions, as they occurred on the eve of a meeting of the "Mechanism" Committee, which is tasked with halting hostilities and discussing practical steps to restore security and stability in the South.

These measures include the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the southern border, the release of Lebanese detainees, and the completion of the Lebanese army’s deployment in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Aoun said that Israel’s continued aggression seeks to undermine all local, regional, and international efforts to halt the ongoing escalation, despite Lebanon’s engagement with these initiatives at multiple levels.

He noted that the Lebanese government has taken concrete steps to extend its authority south of the Litani River, measures that have been implemented by the Lebanese army with professionalism, discipline, and precision.

Aoun renewed his appeal to the international community to intervene effectively to bring an end to Israel’s continued aggression against Lebanon and to enable the Mechanism  Committee to carry out its mandate with the consent of the concerned parties and the necessary international support.

Christmas wishes and congratulations

He also extended his congratulations to the Armenian Orthodox community in Lebanon on the occasion of Christmas, which he said embodies the values of peace, love, and hope for all humanity. He praised the community’s longstanding and active presence in Lebanon, highlighting the Armenians’ contributions over generations to the country’s cultural, economic, and social life, describing them as a source of pride for all.

He said: “On this sacred occasion, we pray that God protect Lebanon and its people, grant peace and security to its land, and guide us all toward the good and prosperity of our country.”
