Lebanon on alert: Fears over potential Israeli strikes threaten economy
The Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida wrote that Israel might target Lebanese infrastructure if Hezbollah were to "commit the sin" of supporting the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Regardless of whether the group would actually commit such a sin, the report triggered Lebanese society to share and propagate the report as if it were a settled fact. A war on Iran has not occurred, Hezbollah’s involvement is not certain, and Israel's threat on Lebanon’s infrastructure is clearly signaling, knowing that military plans are never revealed in advance.
The widespread circulation of the report harms the country as a whole. Many Lebanese rushed to wonder whether the airport might be closed or sabotaged, preventing their children from arriving or themselves from traveling again. Many abroad quickly adjusted their travel plans, postponing or canceling trips. Meanwhile, some began preparing for possible shortages of medicines or food supplies.
This is a report that could change the situation in the country and affect its economy, especially given that the economy is fragile and weak, with no real investments. While the news cannot be ignored, it should also not be exaggerated or turned into a “trend” on social media. This is a responsibility that rests with the Lebanese themselves, who, whether intentionally or not, contribute to eroding trust in their country, further stagnating the economy, and deepening tensions in daily life.
