Egyptian actor Hisham Ashour is known for gravitating toward bold, thought-provoking roles rather than safe or superficial projects - a tendency clearly reflected in his performance as a religious figure in "The Atheist."

The film, which recently premiered in Egyptian cinemas after multiple delays, sparked controversy for its storyline centered on a Muslim character who turns to atheism after grappling with profound religious doubts.

In an exclusive interview with Annahar, Ashour shared behind-the-scenes insights into his involvement in the film and addressed the controversy surrounding it, as some critics have described the work as promoting atheism or disrespecting Islam.

Ashour rejected these accusations, stressing that the film offers a different perspective and is “highly neutral,” adding that it neither offends Islam nor targets the faith in any way. Instead, he explained, the film presents both viewpoints within a balanced framework, without any negative portrayal of religion. “In the end,” he said, “no one can offend Islam.”

He explained that the filmmakers chose the title "The Atheist" for its strong impact and its ability to spark wide public debate, noting that the original proposed title was "Yahya." According to Ashour, the final title naturally stirred concern because of its direct association with atheism, even though the film’s content itself is more nuanced than the name suggests.

The Egyptian actor stressed that the film reflects realities that exist within society, saying it tackles ideas that have long been deeply embedded but rarely addressed openly. He explained that the film brings these issues to the surface and invites discussion, describing this approach as one of its most compelling and meaningful aspects.

Playing a religious figure and the experience behind it

Speaking about his role as a religious figure in an extended scene alongside a group of prominent actors, Ashour said, “I’m drawn to challenging projects - work that isn’t easy or superficial. Thankfully, I have the ability to fully inhabit different characters and adapt my performance and language, so I was genuinely happy when I was asked to audition for the role.”

He explained that director Mohamed Al-Adl sent him a scene to assess his suitability for the role, adding: “I actually welcome auditions—they allow the director to make sure I’m the right fit. Stepping into a role without an audition, in my view, isn’t professional.”

Ashour praised Ahmed Hatem’s portrayal of “Yahya,” a young man raised in a conservative family who, driven by personal struggles, begins to question his beliefs and ultimately embraces atheism. He said, “He delivered an outstanding performance—this may be one of his strongest roles. The script was powerful, and the cast brought it to life with intense emotion.” Ashour added that “the ending is very moving, and audiences will leave feeling satisfied.”

From Egyptian cinema to Hollywood

Ashour also revealed his involvement in Hollywood projects, including the series Debriefing the President, which depicts the true story of Saddam Hussein’s capture. He plays a significant role in a key scene lasting four to five minutes alongside the lead actor.

He also highlighted a new film project, noting that he recently shot a scene that attracted considerable attention. An American director has expressed interest and may soon begin developing and writing the project. The film is expected to be shot in both Los Angeles and New York, portraying events set in the United States.

Hisham Ashour in 2026… Between ambition and love

Ashour said: "I only take on projects that feel truly genuine. I studied acting in New York in 2013 and 2014, and acting is a real passion of mine, so I choose roles that I genuinely believe in."

"I work on myself every day and have very ambitious goals. I hope that one day I can be part of a major Hollywood production, even in a small role, or a truly significant Egyptian film like "The Atheist." I want my work to have an impact and convey something meaningful, because that is what brings me true happiness."

Regarding his message for the new year, Ashour said: "I hope people can return to loving one another a little more and ease the harshness between them. Too many have become superficial, imitating each other and chasing fame. I hope society finds its balance - how, I’m not sure - but that is my sincere wish."

Regarding his personal life following his recent separation from actress Nelly Karim, Ashour indicated that he does not rule out entering a new love relationship, saying: "It’s not easy - it’s very difficult, especially with past experiences, which naturally make one cautious. Yet, anything can happen at any moment."
