The United States is considering sending at least ten thousand additional soldiers to the Middle East in the coming days, according to American media on Friday, suggesting it may indicate a ground operation within the framework of the war with Iran.

The Wall Street Journal cited officials in the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) as saying that the aim is to provide more military options for President Donald Trump in the war that began on February 28.

It added that this force, likely to include infantry units and armored vehicles, will join about five thousand Marine Corps elements and thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division, who have previously been deployed in the region.

It noted that “it is not precisely known where these forces will be stationed in the Middle East, but it is likely they will be within strike range against Iran and Kharg Island, a vital oil export center off the Iranian coast.”

Meanwhile, the news site Axios described the exploration of deploying these forces as “a new indication that an American ground operation in Iran is being seriously prepared.”

The site quoted a senior official in the U.S. Department of Defense as expecting a decision next week on the deployment of the troops, noting that these elements will come from combat units different from those previously sent to the region.
