The United Nations Security Council will convene Thursday afternoon "to provide a briefing on the situation in Iran", according to a spokesperson for the Somali presidency of the Council.

The scheduling memo stated that it was the United States that requested the session.

In this context, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on its citizens in Iran to leave, while human rights organizations report that the crackdown on protests has resulted in the killing and arrest of thousands of people.

Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimates indicate that the number of its citizens in Iran is around 10,000.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had been informed that "executions" had stopped in Iran, amid human rights reports indicating a violent crackdown by authorities against participants in anti-government protests.

Trump has spoken in recent days about providing assistance to the Iranian people in the face of the crackdown carried out by the authorities, which human rights groups say has resulted in the killing of no less than 3,428 people.

During an event at the White House, Trump stated that he had been informed "by a trusted source" that "the killing is stopping in Iran. It has stopped... and there are no planned executions", without providing further details.

In response to a question from an Agence France-Presse reporter in the Oval Office about whether US military action is now ruled out, Trump answered "We will monitor the situation and see how things go".
