Record surge for gold and silver… How much did an ounce reach?
Gold and silver prices hit record levels on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on several major European countries over their opposition to his push to annex Greenland, triggering fresh fears of a trade war.
Strong demand for the two metals - widely seen as safe havens - at the start of Asian trading pushed gold to a peak of $4,690.59 per ounce, while silver climbed to $94.12 per ounce.
On Saturday, Trump warned eight European countries that had sent troops to Greenland that new tariffs would be imposed unless the Danish territory is sold “in full” to the United States.
The additional 10% duties are set to take effect on February 1 and could rise to 25% from June 1.
Among other precious metals, platinum rose 1.9% in spot trading to $2,373.08 per ounce, while palladium gained 0.5% to $1,809 per ounce.
