BEIRUT: Perhaps most exciting things about a new month rolling are birthdays, paychecks, and definitely the new films that will be dropping in theatres across the country. This August will hopefully be full of celebrations, and worthwhile paychecks, but is guaranteed to be loaded with a list of blockbusters and star-studded films to also really look forward to:

THE DARKEST MINDS

The same producers that brought us the incredible Netflix show Stranger Things, now present to us another Sci-Fi marvel to enjoy — The Darkest Minds. This film focuses on a group of super-teens that are on the run from a detainment camp they managed to escape, and are now on a mission to bring down the government that tried to tame them.

Starring: Amandla Stenberg, Harris Dickinson, and Many Moore.

THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME

Mila Kunis has been on an annual streak of delivering comedy movies to her audience’s likings, and this year, the successful streak continues. This action/comedy flick revolves around two best friends who find themselves caught in a huge, international conspiracy after finding out that one of their ex-boyfriends was actually a spy.

Starring: Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon, and Sam Heughan

THE EQUALIZER 2

Hollywood legend Denzel Washington has arrived to adorn our summer with a sequel to the 2014 blockbuster The Equaliser, where Washington plays Robert McCall, a vigilante helping the helpless. This year, McCall is actually seeking revenge for his best friend’s death in the hands of thugs close to his home. Being familiar with the previous Equaliser movie, it’s almost-guaranteed that Washington will put on an action-packed show against the highly-skilled assassins that are after him.

Starring: Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Melissa Leo.

WOMAN WALKS AHEAD

This one is for the more low-key films lovers, and an audience that loves to look for art in movies. This film is a portrayal of the true story of Catherine Weldon, an 1890’s New York painter, who travels long miles to Dakota, to paint a portrait of a Native American chief. She then finds herself not only learning more about the racial conflict between the Native Americans and the Army officers, but also getting caught in the middle of their face off.

Starring: Jessica Chastain, Michael Greyeyes, and Sam Rockwell.

BLACKkKLANSMAN

Set in the 1970s, the Colorado Police hires their first African American detective, who, in result, feels compelled to prove himself up for the job. With that, he embarks on a dangerous mission of infiltrating and exposing the supremacist group — the Ku Klux Klan. This film is also a true story, based on the autobiography of the detective himself, Ron Stallworth — with the film being directed by the visionary, Spike Lee.

Starring: John David Washington, Adam Driver, and Topher Grace.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS

This modern, hilarious romantic comedy tackles the story of Nick, who decides to introduce his long-term girlfriend, Rachel, to his family in Singapore. Little does she know, though, that Nick’s family are actually loaded with money, and he is practically Asia’s number one bachelor. Will middle-class, Americanised Rachel be able to fit in, and make his filthy rich parents fall in love with her?

Starring: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh.

Mile 22

One of the big screen’s favorite sweethearts, Mark Wahlberg, is here to deliver an action-packed blockbuster, and make this summer officially his. In Mile 22, Wahlberg is a CIA agent, who is trusted with an enormous, confidential mission: to secretly move a valuable police officer with life-threatening information, safely and secretly, out of Indonesia.

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Ronda Rousey, and Iko Uwais.
