Lebanon FM throws support behind outgoing Nissan chairman

BEIRUT: Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil threw his support Tuesday behind embattled Nissan Motors Co. chairman Carlos Ghosn, a day after accusations were leveled against the prominent Lebanese businessman.

Bassil directed Lebanese ambassador to Tokyo Nidal Yehya to “closely monitor Ghosn’s case and ensure his ability to fairly defend himself.”

The Ministry remains steadfast in “standing by Ghosn during this ordeal,” the statement read.

Ghosn, a dual French and Lebanese citizen, was brought in for questioning Monday on allegations of shady financial dealings within the company.

The revelations came to light after Japanese newspaper Asahi said Ghosn submitted voluntarily to questioning about suspected violations of financial and exchange regulations while underreporting his income over many years.

Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa expressed “disappointment and frustration” at the news, while vowing to hold a board meeting Thursday to vote on Ghosn’s fate.

Ghosn stepped down from his role as Nissan CEO last year, but continued as both Nissan and Renault chairman.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi operate in a three cross country alliance.
