BEIRUT: The last batch of movies for the summer is (sadly) releasing next week, but it seems as if the best summer flicks have been saved for the last month of the season. Here’s a sneak peek of the highlights of this month’s releases, including a highly-anticipated Lebanese movie everybody’s been patiently waiting for:

THE NUN

Youtube has decided to ban this film’s ad from showing on its platform before videos start playing because of how scary it is, so for all horror film enthusiasts, brace yourself — a wave is coming in the form of a demonic nun.

Starring: Taissa Farmiga, Bonnie Aarons and Demián Bichir.

JOHNNY ENGLISH STRIKES AGAIN

It’s a mysterious joy to watch Rowan Atkinson, who is the face of the classic, silent Mr. Bean, perform dangerous stunts and embody a professional secret service agent that speaks! This is the third installment of the action and comedy-packed Johnny English movie series.

Starring: Rowan Atkinson, Ben Miller, Emma Thompson.

THE MERCY

Set in 1968, this biographical film is a look at yachtsman Donal Crowhurst’s solo attempt to win the Golden Globe Race, with his family patiently awaiting his return on the other side of the world. With a star like Colin Firth as the main character, an excellent and emotional performance is pretty much guaranteed.

Starring: Colin Firth, Rachel Weisz, David Thewlis.

CAPERNAUM

The long-awaited Nadine Labaki gem is finally seeing the light in Lebanese cinemas. The hype around the film grew ever since it won the prestigious Jury Prize at the none other Cannes Festival. The plot of the film has not been, definite neither from the synopsis nor the trailer, but it essentially revolves around poverty and its effect on children — and judging from Labaki’s previous work, the audience will be in for an incredible cinematic ride.

Starring: Zain Al Rafeea, Boluwatife Treasure Bankole, Nadine Labaki.

POPE FRANCIS: A MAN OF HIS WORD

This film is actually the first documentary of its kind, where a Pope opens his doors for a camera crew to document and ask questions. This film follows the widely popular Pope Francis on his personal journeys, as he travels the globe, spreading his messages of love, and seeing to the issues of the world. This documentary is directed by award winning German director, Wim Wenders.

THE PREDATOR

You might be familiar with the 1987 classic science fiction movie, Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; three decades later, the same terrifying aliens from space are visiting the Earth once again, however, this is not a reboot — it’s just 30 years later. As the fourth installment of the sci-fi series, the predators returns stronger and bolder in this one, after a young boy triggers their return, leaving it up to a science teacher and ex-soldiers to prevent them from ending humanity.

Starring: Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Olivia Munn, Alfie Allen.

SIBERIA

An action movie is never a bad idea, especially when it’s starring Keanu Reeves in Russia. In this film, Reeves is an American diamond merchant, who gets caught in a mafia war when a big deal takes a wrong turn.

Fun fact about Reeves: He was actually born in Beirut!

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Boris Gulyarin, Ashley St. George
