As autumn began, the assault on Gaza started as well. This season unfolded a catastrophe, leaving Palestinians experiencing something unlike anywhere else in the world. They never anticipated witnessing a second Nakba after suffering from ethnic cleansing by Zionist forces between 1948 and 1949. However, will spring ease the pain and bring about positivity and hope?
As tree leaves fall in autumn, humanity seemed to wither away, the international community was completely absent, Palestinians were dying of starvation, even the sense of meaning fell.
Noam Chomsky linguist, a cognitive scientist and a professor at MIT, a well-known critic of the US and its policies in the world especially in the Middle East, along with Ilan Pappe, director of the European center for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter and the Chair of the Emil Touma Institute for Palestinian studies in Haifa, both agreed in their book “Gaza in Crisis” on three points: first, the Palestinian people are victims of ethnic cleansing and significant violations of their human rights on all levels; second, the official strategy of Israel has always been to make Palestinians live a demeaningful life third; there seems to be a shift in western public opinion toward the need for transitional justice for Palestinians and the condemnation of Israel and its practices.
However, the title of Chomsky and Pappe’s book is misleading, as only two chapters of the eight are devoted to Gaza. Gaza in Crisis has a major issue which is the lack of a clear target audience, leaving readers with mixed messages. Chomsky and Pappe aim to challenge and test; however, their book needs a combination of both their perspectives to produce a coherent map of the future.
Autumn, the season that marked a profound shift on how Gazans saw the outside world, revealed to Gazans that the world is treating them differently than other human beings, with their collapsed homes, demolished communication networks enforced distances between the loved ones.
Palestinians now ask: “If our homes are gone, who will restore our faith in life?”
And now spring is looming in the air, I pray that it will mend the broken hearts and bring about more hope.
