Dozens of youths blocked the entrances to Sudan's main port on the Red Sea (Port Sudan), on Sunday, and a land road linking it to the rest of the country, in protest against the part of eastern Sudan from the peace agreement that was signed in Juba.

The protesters belong to the Beja tribes, who are considered the indigenous people of eastern Sudan and point out that the signatories belong to the Bani Amer tribe, which they believe does not represent the majority of the region's population.

Sidi Moussa, one of the protesters who closed the road in the Sankat area (120 km west of Port Sudan), said: "We closed the road and will not allow anyone to pass, unless if the government withdraws from the agreement that was signed yesterday in Juba, those who signed do not represent eastern Sudan and did not take the viewpoint of the stakeholders." ".

The Sudanese transitional government signed a peace agreement on Saturday with five armed movements and five political movements mediated by South Sudan.

The agreement stipulated that the signatories would have 30 percent of the authority in the region, which consists of the Red Sea, Kassala and Gedaref states.

The agreement includes eight protocols related to issues of land ownership, transitional justice, compensation, nomadic and pastoral sector development, wealth-sharing, power-sharing, and the return of refugees and displaced persons, in addition to the security protocol for integrating movement fighters into the government army to become an army that represents all components of the Sudanese people.

Last August, clashes took place between the Beja and Bani Amer in the city of Kassala, as a result of the Beja’s objection to the appointment of a governor for the state of Kassala, belonging to Bani Amer.
